How To Fight Those "Time-Of-The-Month" Cravings!
All of us dread THAT time of month. Why?
Where do I begin...the cramps, the bloating and the cravings are just a few symptoms that come along with our periods. One of the worst to overcome particularly while you are trying to lose weight, are those pesky period food cravings!
Sometimes you feel like there is physically nothing that can stop you from devouring that entire chocolate cake! Scientists believe that low progesterone and high oestrogen levels generate a drop in blood sugar levels, which leads to sugar cravings.
However, although eating sugary treats will raise the blood levels it will also lead to a crash, creating a roller coaster of anxiety, irritability and even more sugar cravings.
How to Deal with Period Cravings
Give these tips a try next time you're looking for the best foods to eat on your period.
1. Eat Six "Mini Meals"
When you eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, it helps to keep your blood sugar levels regulated and stops those cravings from becoming binges. Space them out for every three hours to give your body constant fuel.
2. Eat More Complex Carbs
As good as that big bowl of pasta or that buttery slice of white bread may look, they will only intensify your cravings and cause you to eat more. Aim to eat lots of fibre-rich complex carbs such as whole grain breads, cereals, beans and vegetables so that your body takes a while to break them down and absorb them, in turn curbing your cravings.
Many women experience lowered levels of magnesium during their periods. Eat magnesium rich foods such as peanut butter, cashews, almonds, brown rice, sunflower seeds and beans. Chocolate is also rich in magnesium which could be an explanation for those cravings. However, milk chocolate is high in fat and sugar so try to eat a small square of good quality dark chocolate which is better for you (lots of anti-oxidants).
4. See The Sunshine!
Lack of sun can reduce serotonin levels, which leads to increased appetite and cravings. Getting out to go for a nice long walk in the sunshine will not only ease your bloating, but it will raise your serotonin levels making you happier and reduces cravings.
