Is Sweating A Sign Of A Good Workout?

Girls, how do you judge when you’ve done a good workout? When your back is drenched in sweat and your face is red?

It’s a good question — is sweating the sign you’ve done a good workout?  Keep reading to find out!

Why do we sweat?

You probably already know that sweat is released when your body is trying to cool itself down. When you’re working out, your muscles and core temperature rise. Your body responds by controlling your internal temperature, so your brain signals for your thermoregulatory response to start. That’s when you begin to perspire. This is called thermal sweating — yes, there are different types of sweating.

How much you sweat can be determined by different things; genes, gender, age, metabolic rate and the temperature around you. It can also be affected by what you’re wearing during a workout. Your gym clothes need regular washing to make sure they are drawing sweat away from your body.

Does sweating mean you’ve done a good workout?

Firstly, any workout you do is good! Don’t forget that.

The type of workout you’re doing can influence how much you’re sweating. For example, walking outside on a hot day may cause you to sweat more than if you did a resistance session in an air-conditioned gym.

Not all training styles leave you drenched in sweat either. Pilates is all about strengthening your core muscles, but you may not sweat as much during pilates as you do during a high-intensity or BBG workout.

That means sweat might not be a reliable indicator that you’ve worked hard. Everyone is different — some people get sweatier than others.

Whether you’re sweating or not, you should aim to stay hydrated! Make sure you drink water before and after a workout, even if you’re not sweating a lot.

What are some signs of a good workout?

How are you feeling after a workout? Usually, you’ll know if you smashed your workout because you’ll feel it in your body.

Other signs are:

  • An increased heart rate.

  • Being out of breath during your workout — if you can hold a conversation, you might not be working hard enough.

  • Muscle fatigue — the last few reps should be extra tough!

  • Feeling hungry right after a workout — your body can be craving fuel.

You might sweat during all of your workouts, only in some or barely at all. That doesn’t mean you aren’t working hard. A consistent routine and a workout plan that grows with you will ensure you are on your way to becoming fitter, stronger and healthier.

As I always say, focus on how you feel!

Whether you sweat a lot or a little, don’t let that stop you from working towards your fitness goals!

Love, Kayla xx
