Ladies, you know I am a big advocate for a healthy diet! When it comes to the health of our skin, what we’re eating and drinking can make a big difference.

While there isn’t necessarily a single cause of breakouts, there are some common links between particular foods and their effect on your skin. These are a few foods you might consider avoiding when you have a breakout.

Refined carbohydrates
You don’t have to cut carbs from your diet completely if you have a breakout! Refined carbohydrates include things like chocolates, lollies, pastries and cakes, plus highly processed foods such as white bread and pasta. Refined carbohydrates can trigger hormonal fluctuations, encouraging breakouts.

Too much dairy
If you’re prone to pimples or spots, try looking at how much dairy you’re eating. Dairy can lead to increased inflammation in the body, which may trigger a breakout. Particularly for women with a sensitivity to dairy, this can upset your gut, which can lead to acne. Try cutting back on dairy-based cheese and yoghurt, or using some non-dairy alternatives.

Fruit juice
You can be forgiven for thinking that fruit juice is a healthy option! What makes fruit juice unhealthy is often there is a LOT of fruit and not much pulp. So your drink can be laden with fruit sugars without the beneficial fibre. This can cause a blood sugar spike, and an increase in sebum production (the oil secreted by our glands) and skin inflammation.

As I mentioned, we all have different skin types. What might trigger a breakout in one person might not affect someone else. Try reducing your intake of these foods and see if that makes a difference!
