So I think it is probably NO surprise to anyone by now how much I LOVE acai bowls! They are super good for you and make the perfect breakfast or brunch. I have a couple of go-to smoothie bowl recipes that I can whip up when I’m in a rush or if it feels too hot to make eggs on toast for breakfast.
If you haven’t had a chance to try acai bowls yet, I think they taste just as good as they look! Some of you might be wondering whether acai is actually good for us, while others might be wondering what acai actually IS! Don’t worry, I’ve answered all of your questions below.
What is acai?
Acai (pronounced a-sah-ee) is a tropical fruit from South America that looks amazing and it also happens to be one of the best-known sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are plant-based chemicals which are great for overall health and fighting free radicals within the body. Acai is a beautiful deep purple colour and acai berries are similar in size to grapes.
You might have already seen lots of beautifully decorated acai bowls on social media or in cafes but did you know that making an acai bowl is actually really easy? Follow my super simple acai bowl recipe below.
How to make an acai bowl
In Australia, acai is pretty much only available either as frozen berries or as a freeze-dried powder. I use either of these, the frozen berries are great if I have time but sometimes I reach for the powder to make a quick acai bowl or a dairy-free blueberry acai smoothie. Either way, skip the cafe version and make your very own acai bowl at home.
The best bit about making acai bowls? They are super fun to eat, especially once they are loaded up with all your favourite toppings! Once you have made the base of the bowl, the topping options are pretty much endless — plus the finished acai bowls make GREAT Instagram pics ;)
Acai bowl ingredients:
Total time: 5 mins
Dietary preferences: Vegetarian, Gluten-free, Dairy-free
- 4 tbsp acai powder
- 1 cup frozen raspberries
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 cup almond milk or coconut water
- 1/2 cup baby spinach leaves
- 1 tsp honey
- Sliced banana
- Chopped almonds
- Chia seeds
1. Blend the acai powder, frozen berries, milk, spinach leaves and honey together. Add a little more almond milk or water if it is too thick. The texture should be a little thicker than a regular smoothie.
2. Add your favourite toppings and enjoy immediately!
Acai bowl toppings
This is the fun part of making an acai bowl! You can be as creative as you like with the toppings OR you can choose to enjoy the acai bowl plain, that’s totally up to you.
Remember that you want the toppings to complement your smoothie bowl, not to overpower it.
Some great acai bowl toppings are:
- Shaved coconut — a simple way to add some healthy fat and to brighten up your acai bowl.
- Bee pollen — not only does this add colour, bee pollen is an immune booster too!
- Kiwifruit — the green colour of kiwifruit really brightens up the acai!
- Granola — perfect for adding some crunch! Try my cacao and coconut granola as a topping.
- Peanut butter — add a small dash of healthy fats to your bowl with a drizzle of peanut butter or almond butter.
- Goji berries — did you know goji berries contain vitamin C? The perfect excuse to add them when making an acai bowl at home.
