Depriving yourself of sleep can cause a lot more stress on your body than you think! The two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, regulate your feelings of hunger and fullness. Without enough sleep, these two hormones can act up, causing you to think you are hungry when you aren't. This can create an environment for overeating, and potential weight gain. Make sure you have enough sleep each night to keep your hormones functioning properly!

2. Drink More Green Tea

Green tea has been shown to increase metabolism and fat oxidation, due to its thermogenic properties, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It also contains less caffeine than a coffee, fewer calories and is loaded with flavanoids and antioxidants! 

3. Incorporating HIIT Cardio

HIIT, or high intensity interval training, is one of the best things you can do to increase your metabolism. This is because of what is know as the after burn effect or EPOC (excessive post exercise oxygen consumption), which is the increase of metabolic functioning after a quick, intense workout! HIIT is one of the main forms of cardio I outline in my guide, and is one of the keys to weight loss!

4. Eat More Dairy

Now, I understand a lot of people are lactose intolerant. For those of you who are not, casein protein, found in most dairy products, has been proven to aid in fat loss while you sleep. This is because it typically takes around 6 to 8 hours for your body to fully digest, potentially aiding in resting metabolic rate. One of the best ways you can add some casein to your diet is through cottage cheese or milk.

5. Increase Your Whole Grains

Due to the complex carbohydrates and fiber found in whole grains, increasing your intake can improve your metabolic functions. Try to eat more whole wheat, oats, brown rice, quinoa, or spelt! I personally love Avgolemono (a greek rice soup).

6. Resistance Training Is Key

Adding resistance training to your exercise routine will help to increase fat loss long after your workout has finished. With resistance training you can not only increase muscle tissue, but also your resting metabolic rate. This can assist in speeding up overall fat burn for almost 16 hours post workout!

7. Turn Up The Heat

By eating more peppers, or even just adding black pepper to your meal, can boost your metabolism! Try cracking some fresh pepper onto your salad, or adding some jalapeño to your eggs for a spicy addition!
